Pruning after slug damage

Hi, need bit of pruning advice, a friend was given a small ( about 12 inches high) hydrangea in a pot and it has been completely eaten away by slugs. I know I can prune it hard but not sure how far down to take it. Ant thoughts? thanks

I have never known slugs to eat hydrangeas. They should be pruned in Spring as Tetley says, but never pruned hard, you just take last years flower buds off.

Are you sure it's a hydrangea.

Gardening on the wild, windy west side of Dartmoor.

  • Hi I'm sending this again as I don't think it went first time! Thank you for the replies. Yes definitely a hydrangea as had dead flowers on and no leaves, only a small one so wonder if that was why it was easy to slugs, or could it have been something else? She said it had lots of leaves when she was given it!

My thoughts too Tetley. Not seen them being vulnerable to slug damage - and heaven knows - we have plenty of those here!  image

They're usually quite pest resistant if they're well established. Possibly something else has been munching as it's a younger/smaller plant and more vulnerable. In pots, that's often the case.

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • Can't post picture at moment as it is at friends house, should have taken one! Lots of her plants have been decimated by slugs this year.
