Lyme disease

B3B3 Posts: 27,481

Just had an insect bite diagnosed as Lyme disease. Got bitten in the garden last week. As I live in London I assume the tick came from foxes. I'm a bit worried about fossicking about in the shrubbery now. Can I assume they're all over the place? What reasonable precautions should l take? Have been able to find plenty of medical advice on the net but no gardening advice. Any advice would be appreciated.

Normally I do not like to give medical advice, as without seeing you etc. etc., it is potentially dangerous. However to my knowledge, the vast majority of cases are spread via deer.

As I am sure you will have found out if you have done the searches, it is a potentially serious condition, although early treatment prevents complications.

There really should not be a problem grubbing about in the garden.

Pretty convinced two doctors and a trainee had a look and took a photo. I was an 'interesting case'! No deer for miles.Richmond Park and Ashdown Forest not in tick jumping distance. Definitely got bitten in the garden. I suppose if I get bitten again I'll know what to look out for.

The ticks are also a problem for cats and dogs so make sure any of your own pets get proper tick treatment from a vet to prevent bites - their stuff is more effective than Frontline form the pharmacy - and make sure you take medical advice yourself.

We're supposed to have loads of the things round here as there are wild roe deer and foxes in local woods and copses so I do regular treatments for the dogs so they're OK.  We haven't been bitten ourselves yet.
