Have had the Chris Beardshaw book out of the library for a while but only recently started reading it. I'm absolutely loving it so far - some of it I knew either from O Level Biology (that gives my age away!) or just general knowledge, but I'm picking up bits and pieces of knowledge and really enjoying his straightforward (but not dull) writing style.
So thank you Artjak

Monty's Ivington Diaries is inspirational and moving.
The Complete Book of Organic Gardening is indispensible, I find - it was a present from my parents when I bought my first house with a garden, and the cover is now tatty, but it's full of great advice.
John Seymour's Self Sufficiency is also splendid and very down to earth, both literally and metaphorically. A few of his opinions may raise the odd eyebrow but what he didn't know about growing fruit and veg (not to mention keeping, slaughtering, butchering and preserving animals; making bread, cheese, beer and all those other products without which our life would be poorer) isn't, by and large, worth knowing. My favourite book.

John Seymour, oh yes, he's been in our library for more years than than I want to think about. We learnt a lot from him
