my neighbour gave me 2 magnolia earlier this year, I have lot of greenage so I'm hoping for flowers come spring, some has been eaten like yours the lace type thing, some hasn't but I did go around and spray some resolva bug spray on the leaves the other week..yes I'm naughty. you could use a rag and some washing up liquid and wipe the leaves over I have been told, not sure how good that works though.
I put them in the ground as I thought I didn't have a pot big enough and they would get more water from nature than me.. So only advice I can give you is they like slightly acidic soil so might be worth working some in to your pot and a good ericaceous feed or just look for a rhodedendron/azaela feed. the one I have is made by doff and seems to be working wonders on my camellia too. all the best butty.
I had the same problem, Magnolia in a pot for 3 or 4 years, had one single flower in all that time. Last year, I gave it a good talking too, said it was on its last chance....flower or compost bin. It produced tonnes of flowers this year without any different treatment. So, Unless anyone comes up with proper sensible advice, go outside and threaten it
