How do I get rid of it .at moment I dare notdig it up  or remove it in case it needs spraying etc .last year I had a few I removed them but did not dig them out .

Hoping for a quick solution

  • if you've got the mushrooms coming to the surface they make up about 2% of the actual fungus mass (the mycelium) growing underground, unless you're planning an open cast mine digging out is not a possibility.

I would just leave alone, with most fungi (with the exception of honey fungus) I have a live and let live policy in my garden

Why do you want rid of them? Most fungi are doing no more than living with a plant in symbiosis, or breaking down dead wood, to produce nice compost. Why not comsider them as autumnal plants, to be valued? Post a picture or two and I might be able to identify them for you.

No they are not plants, nor are they animals, although they are closer to animals in some ways. I was being very casual referring to them as plants.

  • I inherited some good books on fungi from my dad. He loved photographing them and always tried to ID them for his slide labels. I  get quite a lot of interesting ones in my garden and fields and can identify some of the more distinctive ones, but a lot are equivalent to the birdwatcher's 'little brown job'!  I enjoy them as a special part of the autumn season.

Larch boletus are a cheery yellow/tan and I get lots of them round my larch trees. A  fun find is the scarlet caterpillar fungus, which only grows where a caterpillar/pupa has died!
