  • Hostafan, to add insult to injury, those particular Sungold tomatoes were average. Next year I shall be trying Gold Nugget, a small tomato said to have wonderful flavour. I also like Coeur de Pigeon, but I haven't seen any seeds for sale. For big ones, I like Marmande, and an Italian Coeur de Boeuf, I can't remember its name. Both of the latter have been brilliant this year, and the flavour indescribable. I also agree that seeds will germinate if they want to, not when they are told to. That is why I enjoy gardening, every day brings a new challenge. Although sometimes ... ???

These are San Marzano, someone sent them to me on the seed swap, they have been fantastic, still loads to come, all turning red. They are huge, but bear the weight very well.

Gardening on the wild, windy west side of Dartmoor.

I spread the seed thinly (straight from the squeezed tomato) on to a piece of kitchen roll the size of my seed tray and let it dry. In the Spring I plant the whole sheet which quickly rots away. It's simple and never failed.
