Is it the same as a rowan tree then?image

  • Yes, Rowan is the common name for sorbus.  But I thought they were tolerant of most situations? Any sorbus knowledge out there?

The reason I'm a bit wary is my next door neighbour ,who was a very experienced plantswoman, had one  in a line with where I was thinking of planting mine. It didn't do well and she had to get rid. I suppose it might have been a dodgy specimen. There are some sad-looking street trees locally  but I suppose the condition might be due to neglect.. Plenty of time to consider because we're still trying to get an old berberis out!

Rowans are pretty tough B3. Could you ask your neighbour what the problem was with her's?

She was an old lady. Unfortunately, she died a good few years ago.

May just have been her conditions, or a poor specimen as you say. Have a look round to see if there are rowans growing in your area. They're lovely trees -  not just the common one, plenty of nice named varieties image

Good luck with making a decision about your tree- lots of nice choices once you start looking!

Thanks fairy. There's a couple in our road but they look a bit ropey. Tarmac isn't the best planting medium!

  •  Sorbus (Mountain Ash and Whitebeam) are easy to grow in almost any soil, they are hardy and tolerant of urban pollution.  . A good idea is to plant your tree in a good sized hole with good compost and bone meal to get it off to a good start. Its also good to supply a sturdy stake and good quality  tree tie to stop the young tree from rocking about so that its roots can get off to a good start.  Make sure its level as well, not too deep and not too high. Use a plank across the hole to make sure its level. As Fairy girl says there are many lovely varieties  available with different coloured leaves and berries .For instance Sorbus aucuparia Autumn Spire, or Chinese lace. Sounds like you have a while to think about it. Good luck.
