That's an interesting photo. With the rope and netting one would expect to see a gull of some sort. Nice to know that gulls don''t have a monopoly at the seaside......but do starlings steal chips?

Yes, but not out of your hand; that is learned behaviour because some people like to feed them.
  • Thanks, you don't see Starlings now like you used to.

Welshonion, a starling pinched part of one of our sandwiches out of our hand, perhaps they don't like chips. He he

  • Just discussing the Starling, are there different types of Starlings? I don't remember them looking quite like the ones we saw today. Also interestingly we didn't see any Gulls.

  • Here in sunny, coastal SW Pembrokeshire we have both Starlings and Jackdaws that have learned to perch and take offerings from peanut feeders (just like Blue Tits and Sparrows). It can develop into quite a 'scrum' at times!! [especially when they all try at the same time!].

You're absolutely right though philippa. People buy too much food to start with - and then chuck half of it away. Literally a throwaway society.

People actively feed gulls too, so it's not surprising they don't bother to go elsewhere first - they just home in on the chip shops or hang around the benches, piers and streets where people are eating. It's the same reason we have so many urban foxes as well. image

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

Chrissy, if you look closely at a starling it is absolutely beautiful. The feathers are perfect and many colours. In fact all birds are just a miracle of colouring. The sad thing is many of us only get to see their true colours if they are dead and in the hand.
  • I've got a piccie very much like yours Chrissy, we live quite close to Mudiford and often go there.
