in Fruit & veg
hello I have just been given my first allotment plot I'm 32 and very keen to learn I have just started to dig it over as there is plenty of weed and grass its a large plot with a shed in good condition and have got hold of a nice green house for free just after as many tips and ideas as possible and if its worth planting anything now or in the next few weeks as I dig it over bit by bit I'm going to start from the bottom turning over about six foot at a time (hopefully) lol so its done before we start to get frost.
thanks in advance for anyone who takes the time to read this and comment )

There are definitely things you can grow now. If you visit your local garden centre you should find some kale, cabbage etc. plants, also japanese onions for overwintering, and garlic which is best planted in the autumn.
If you concentrate on a small patch - removing the perennial weed roots as you go, and adding manure or compost - you won't get daunted by the amount of work!
You could also plant soft fruit (raspberries, strawberries, currants, gooseberries) now if you fancy growing them. They are best planted in the autumn.
At the end of October you can sow some Broad Bean Aquadulce Claudia - they'll grow slowly through the winter without any protection, then give you a crop around the end of May before the blackfly are about to spoil them

than you guys that's great info
You can also sow some quick crops like radishes and pak choi and even spinach to get a crop before the frosts.
I've just had a mail from this site offering free p&p on seeds - http://www.vegetableseeds.net/
thank you
I do like to put in red onions and garlic now because you don't have to do anything to them except weed a bit in the spring. They are usually ready by July next year. ( I put some chicken pellets in the soil before planting.)
Janebal - do you plant onion seeds or sets please?
great idea I do love garlic janebal thanks and thanks Envii for the link
In case Janebal doesn't reply in time - for Tootles - this time of year you'd plant sets, special varieties designed to overwinter. Your garden centre should have them.
Yes, I plant sets because they are so reliable and grow really well without needing any looking after. For the garlic, I plant ones with 'Wight' in the name because they are from the Isle of Wight and are suitable for our climate.
I plant red onion sets because red onions are more expensive to buy than white ones (so I kid myself that I am saving more overall). Also they are sweeter and I can use them in salads as well as stews.
