protecting cherry trees

Hi, I have a cherry tree (not sure of variety) that is in a container in a sheltered position on my patio. Id like to know if I should cover the branches with a fleece to protect it over winter or bring it into my greenhouse. Or maybe leave it where it is as it is and stop fussing!! Any advice gratefully received ????

  • Ahh yes that would be helpful!!  We are in East Sussex.  In land though not on the coast.  Garden faces North (ish!).  It is open to elements as we are at the top of a hill but the patio itself is sheltered.

  • I'd put the pot up on feet or bricks to ensure good drainage over the winter, and bubble wrap the pot so that the soil and roots don't get frozen.

The tree itself should be fine, but when it blossoms in the spring you might need to fleece it at night if it's frosty.

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

  • Thank you both!  Very grateful for your advice image
