If it's in full sun, you can also consider thymus serpyllum. (Creeping thyme.) I've trying it in a small area but noticed large patches on the lawn of the hospital where I work in summer. Seedaholic sells seeds. Also can try chamomile treneague. Apparently the real low growing lawn chamomile doesn't flower and isn't true from seed. I bought some once not knowing what it was and it spread into quite a nice mat and now I wish I brought it with me to my new house cause I can't find it anywhere locally. I think you can find plugs on-line.
OK well I've created a "crescent moon" shaped section of the lawn as a trial and put some of that border edging stuff down to separate it, I'll kill off that section then in a couple of weeks start to fork it back to soil before moving some Armeria, err, separations in (break the existing plants up).
@hogweed - Yes agree about the hummocks, I'll have to see how it pans out, it's not a heavy use lawn, it'd only get trodden on when hanging the washing out, plus a 1 year old , but he seems to like looking at flowers so far.
@obelixx - Thanks I'll look into this, I have heard of a lawn made of this so could always create another section.
@Watery - thanks for this too, any chance of a photo of how yours it looking?
Very new and done from seed so just a few tiny seedlings as yet. If it comes out, I'll post a pic. Good luck with yours. I like the idea of the crescent moon in the midst of the lawn.
Presumed it was a front garden due to the pix you posted
If it's one you want to use I'd go for the thyme already suggested. It doesn't mind a fair bit of abuse! The only thing to consider is that if your young child will be using it, it will be a no go area when it's flowering as the bees love it. Possible issue there with little bare feet....
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
