Hi everyone.I have a question. This year clematis wilt claimed two of my plants, what's the rule of thumb. , can I plant clematis in the same position next spring or should I avoid.

Clematis wilt is actually rather rare. What were the varieties which 'succumbed' and who diagnosed it for you?

Yes, you may replant in the same place. If you are concerned then add some of the Replant stuff which is sold these days.

  • Sorry, no idea which variety, and wilt was my presumption, whilst in full flower they simply just died off, first in different sections of the plant which I cut away then they just died, never had this happen before.thankyou for your reply.

I had a clematis in half barrel which "died"

As it was planted at the base of a climbing rose, I just left it in situ.

2 years later it came back to life.

I'd agree with Berghill. It's very rare.

I've had sections of a mature clematis die back suddenly - it's usually slugs and snails chewing through a stem, even if it's a fairly woody piece. You can trace it back to the base of the plant. It happened recently to one of mine.

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

As I keep saying, wilt starts at the bottom of a Clematis and goes up, mechanical damage (molluscs, lawn mower, wind, careless passer-by) starts at the top and works down.

We too have had ones regrow a few years after apparently dying.

This is why to plant Clematis deep as when phoma clematioina fungus attacks mainly large flowered hybrids through a wound or cut in the plant, if you cut all plant to the ground and destroy ,mulch and leave you have a good chance of it coming back if you planted deep.

  • Thanks for the advice Zenjeff
