Please anyone grown peony from seed

granmagranma Posts: 1,931

Hi my friends , I wonder please has anyone have any tips on growing tree peony's from seed ? Should I soak the seed first ? or have read that in hot countries you need to put seed tray in freezer to start off the germination.

I bought some seed which was quite expensive so I want to do things right!

    Hi lucky.

Yes, I do it a lot, Fresh seed is really good, take it out of the pod, sow it in gritty compost, grit on top, Stand it outside somewhere and forget about it til the next spring. If nothing happens, wait til the next spring. It may have formed a root but no a shoot the first year.

It's the same for bought, older seed but not so quick and reliable.

The fridge is a substitute for the real world in winter.

Years ago a kind neighbour gave me Tree Peony seeds and warned me that they took two years to germinate. I didn't plant themimage

If you had sown them they would have been flowering by now artkak.

  • I seem to remeber that my tree peony has seeded naturally beneath the main plant... so it's worth keeping an eye open for seedling plants.
