My dahlia tubers are not doing anything

In an unheated greenhouse my dahlias are just showing new growth now, so I would definitely persevere. After taking them out of storage I left them to soak in a bucket of water for 24 hours (they seemed a bit dry) and then put them in shallow seed trays of compost and into the greenhouse, keeping them moist. It took a while for them to do anything. Whether or not they will flower is another thing!

Mine went rotten and are now on the compost heap. Along with their cardboard box

    In the sticks near Peterborough
  • Left mine in the terra firma for the second year running, no sign yet, as expected though...

Being a pessimist, i'm always pleased with the outcome image

I always keep the 'eyes' of the dahlia at almost soil level. It does help with waking the stalks up. Too deep and you risk them not waking, in my experience, at very least it slows them down for weeks.

Poor year for me too with dahlias. I kept about 50 tubers last year they seemed fine after winter but rotted quickly when potted up. I think it just has been too cold. Only 12 have come back to life. Bishop variety has done the best and i have even split some of the tubers when they sprouted. some of the large cactus ones have come through but i lost all the dwarf bedding type. I also think they rather a dry heat. I initially started heating greenhouse with a parafin heater but it caused condensation. Switched to electric fan type and all my plants seem healthier. I always plant tubers with a bit of the top of the tuber showing above compost. i find if they are totally buried they rot easier.

I planted a couple of dahlia bulbs I bought in Lidl about a month ago and can't see any sign of them. I planted them when the cold weather ended. I've seen other bulbs and shoots appear, especially in light of the warm, sunny weather of the last week or so.

Are these something that needs to be planted in pots and kept in greenhouses at first? I just put them into the soil.

I had only 50% success this yr with some new, small tubers bought in. They werent expensive, so not too unhappy really.....

The big ones that I grow in pots from one yr to the next, including chocolate cosmos, are all over wintered in their wrapped pots & covered with fleece 'hats' in an unheated part-glazed porch that can be cold, but frost free.

I did end up tipping the non-starters out of their pots, & checking things out. Yes, still solid tubers with growing points, but nope, just didnt want to get going, despite the warm sunny windowsill.

Chances are Tomsk that they're too cold still. They may have survived, but I'd check them out, very carefully, to see if any signs of life. IME They need to be started off inside, with some heat- windowsill in my case- & not put out/planted out until after the risk of the last frost for your area. J.

they need plenty of warmth and light to sprout. prehaps put them in a pot and place on sunny windowsill for a week or so

  • Both have suddenly sprouted into life.  Just shows a little patience................

Mother's Day gift from my son was M & S dahlia in a large terracotta pot complete with  (rather strange) compost. Planted according to instructions, which said nothing about unseated greenhouses, after frosts finished but nothing coming up yet. What a shame if it doesn't do anything.
