general Q about feeding

Hi, i always see in magazines (etc) that the advice is to feed plants weekly (etc) - so far i have always used slow release granules, it says one application lasts all season

so i was wondering why anyone would want to have to feed weekly when they can use these slow release granules instead?

is there an advantage of one over the other?
