I need a lot of no 3, can I make it up myself to save money. many thanks for any replies.

You can - the term John Innes No xx is a formula - the recipes are here http://gardenofeaden.blogspot.co.uk/2011/03/how-to-make-john-innes-compost.html
However, if you're doing this in bulk you need a good solid surface to turn it all out on and to mix it, plenty of space, a good shovel and a strong back and arms. Depending on the amount you need it may be worth it.

Just had a thought - you could hire an electric cement mixer for a day to mix a big batch, as long as you had somewhere to put it all.
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
