Too late to grow anything in veg patch?

I've finished making and preparing my three raised veg beds. They are only 3x2 feet and 1 plank deep. I dug manure and compost into the ground beneath them before filling the beds with a mix of compost and top soil from my garden.

I guess it's too late to grow any veg? If not, what can I grow? If yes, shall I grow something else in them that will improve the soil for next year's veg? Suggestions of what I could/should grow, please!

Garden centres currently have various veg plants such as kale and spring cabbage, and you can plant rocket seed with a little protection.

Also you can plant overwintering onion sets and garlic now. See d t browns website for varieties to plant now.

  • Aquadulce 'Claudia' broad beans can be sown in late October - they'll grow slowly over winter with no need for protection etc, and give you an early crop (around late May) and that way they usually avoid getting black fly image

I put some turnip seed in a couple of weeks ago, like Monty suggested on Gardeners World.  They've germinated! I didn't think they would as the packet said last sowing should be July, so I'm delighted! Might be worth giving it a go. The seeds were only £1.99 and I only used half the packet.

  • At this rate I'll have to get a polytunnel!

  • Advice please.  I have a 1 metre veg plot and a very large tub.  For the last three years I have grown broad beans in the veg plot and through the winter, cabbage. In the big tub has been runner beans (poor growth this year - used white lady).  I believe I can't grow the same veg now in both beds, so what I can grow?  I realise that I could replace all the soil but can't afford that.  Any suggestions would be welcome.  My husband likes broad beans so I'm going to start them off this winter in my new glass greenhouse and will plant them in flower borders next year.
