Allium questions

Do allium neapolitanum attract bees? And does letting alliums seed mean the bulb isn't replenished?

    yes, and no.

All alliums I've ever grown have attracted bees and I've always allowed them to self seed.

Just make sure they're in good healthy soil.

  • Perfect! Our clay is rapidly becoming beautiful soil with a bit of TLC.

My last garden was 12" of builders' sand, this one is clay and rock. I prefer this one, on the whole.

  • Clay holds nutrients well, so can make a good loam with lots of organic matter. image

It's the best medium bookmonster. As you're discovering, adding plenty of organic matter and grit makes it ideal for a huge range of plants. I've always gardened on clay. Even on sites which haven't had any 'garden'  before - just compacted grass - plants grow brilliantly once they've had a couple of years of attention.

I add lots of grit to the soil when I plant bulbs as we get a lot of rain. I mix it in rather than just putting a load in the bottom of the hole. I think it works better that way. image

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
