There are lots of good suggestions already, one more that hasn't been mentioned is Sea Buckthorn; very spikey but the pollinating insects love it and thrushes love the orange berries.

Based in Sussex, I garden to encourage as many birds to my garden as possible.
  • hi I know how you feel about the wind it can cause lots of damage and slow down your plants.

i have used scaffold netting for a few years just placed five feet high where i know the winds have come across the allotment and this has broken the strength of it to enable plants which are in the eraly growth period of actually having a chance.

put up in barriers between paths has worked well and i will continue to use it

    happy gardening

  • Asparagus tolerates salt winds...

Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.
  • Thanks for all your ideas. I have decided to really look at what is successful in the garden and only grow those. I love delphiniums, campanula, dahlias, all the cottage garden plants but it's such a struggle. I'm going to take all of your suggestions and go with it not against it. I love asparagus so that's going in. We live in an area where samphire grows wild, is it feasible to grow it in the garden? Thanks again for all your advice, much appreciated, going to try again.

  • Susie, asparagus will be a long-term crop if you decide to grow it.  If you look on line it'll give you instructions on preparing a bed for it before you plant.  Then you have to wait a year or two before you can start cropping - but eventually it's worth all the hard work!  image

  • There was a garden featured on Beechgrove that suffered from wind and it might be worth you catching it on iplayer for how to deal with it and what plants were growing in the garden.

  • Thanks for the advice. I have never seen Beechgrove but have just found it and downloaded the episode. I shall look forward to watching it. Thanks again
