Will my white hydrangea stay white?

Yesterday I bought a Hydrangea Macrophylla with white flowers. I have taken a few cuttings from it before planting the plant in a tub to sit on the patio. Will the flowers be white next year? I have blue and pink hydrangeas planted in the soil and am aware the colour of the flowers is determined to some extent by the type of soil. I would like these to remain white. Any advice would be welcome. Thanks.

  • I have a white hydrangea which gets pale pink flowers later in the season but it is very pretty so do not mind that.  Most of the summer the flowers are white though.

Mine start of white then the centre go blue/grey then the whole thing, then I turf them out.

    maybe the  Macrophylia are different.

The answer to Christine's question is yes it will stay white in a tub, but they are quite thirsty hungry plants that like to grow big so I don't know how long you can keep it in there for. I find they do best in the ground.

  • I've just got 2 x Annabelle white ones for my white bed - so any sign of a colour change and they'll be out!

Order in the border. They've been pure white during the summer
  • that's good news Musher, thanks. Pale lime is acceptable! But if they start going down the blue/pink route I have other places they can live. Thank you!

  • Thanks to all for your very helpful advice. The hydrangea is not a named one, it was half price on the clearance bench at Homebase, couldn't resist buying it! For now I plan to leave it in a pot on the patio. When /  if it gets too big I will plant it in the ground.

I will let you know if it remains white next summer. Managed to get 8 cuttings off it, usually get a good success rate with Hydrangeas hope these take!

  • Here is a picture of my white hydrangea which gives a pure white show throughout the summer then heralds autumn by turning a delightful pale oink.which it is in the processing of doing now.
