Hey thanks for all the replies I'm really greatful! I will definitely try a ons skin so soft, do you know where is a good place to buy it?
So am I right in assuming there's no way to disrupt them breeding? There's no way to bring their population down just a bit over the summer? Because last summer was like a plague!
Skin so soft is advertised up here in a lot of the hotels and B&Bs for hillwalkers because it works! I'm not bothered by them much thankfully. The worst ones I saw were at 4,000ft up on the summit of Ben Lawers- quite incredible!
I think if you check there website you might be able to find out places to get or an agent in your area Luubear.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
I wonder if this SSS has vanilla ? they're not supposed to like that.. I will get as preventative for myself and littlies, neat lavender oil on bites soothes and helps stop itching
I agree about the Avon Skin so Soft (original - they have added other "perfumes" over the years).
The only way to prevent midges etc from breeding is to ensure there is no open water eg in a forgotten bucket round the back of the shed! And for the water butt - I add a little bit of Armillotox (about half a capful) which forms a sheen over the top, and prevents midges from laying eggs. I tend to use the butt as a dip-in reservoir rather than using the tap, and a bit of Armillotox in the water does no harm for general watering. (It can be used, is particular dilutions, for example, as a soil drench against vine weevils!).
If you need to go out when it's midgey & don't care what you look like (!), I can recommend the fine mesh hood available from angling suppliers. If you wear a cap & put the hood on over the top, it won't flap on your face and you can see through it pretty well. Tuck into neck of shirt. Then tuck trousers into socks... With long sleeves and gardening gloves you'll be a bit hot, but bite free!
Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.
Please can anybody help? Our garden is absolutely full of midges - from left to right and top to bottom!! Our next door neighbour is even worse off and the Cemetery, which is next door to her, is just one huge cloud.
Midges just LOVE me, being fair skinned, and of course when bitten I end up with big blistery lumps which go septic. However we have found that by taking a Vitamin B Complex daily it makes our skin smell horrible and they don't bite as much.

Get SSS from Avon website or a local Avon rep
I'm allergic so always carry antihistamine (on prescription) just in case and if I get caught by something nasty take it straight away
Mossies are a problem in Thailand - I've used Jungle Formula each time and have never been bitten when I've got it on. I get it from Boots
Don't know why I don't use it here - loads of bites this year
Plain yoghurt is very soothing for the bites
Billericay - Essex
Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit.
Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad.

I find midges worse around here than mozzies.
