Dianthus from Aldi

Has anyone else bought dianthus from Aldi thinking that they were dianthus as I did.Only after a few days they started growing very quickly any the leaves were not strappy and thin, I pinched them out thinking they wre growing leggy but they kept going. Eventually I looked them up with the generic name dianthus ,are they actually sweet willliam? cos if so Ii will have to put tham into a different place and bemoan the fact that I really wanted dianthus like small carnations!

p.s they are over 12 inches tall after only 4 weeks and pinching out but very bushy!

Hi caravan queen, I am just looking in my RHS Grow your own flowers and dianthus has many varieties including pinks (which is what I think you were expecting) , sweet William and the tall carnations for cutting so there are different varieties of dianthus.

Hope this is of some help.

Sounds like that's what you've got CQ. I don't like the sweet williams just the pinks-but I always call them dianthus becauseI always feel it's their correct name. It's very misleading when you buy a plant and the labels are not totally accurate. Hope you didn't lose too much money on them.

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
