Hi chaps, My bearded irises look a mess. Can I cut back all of the leave into that fan shape or should I just pull off the dead leaves? Thanks

you can lift and divide them now B3. I'm sure if you google something like " splitting bearded iris" you'd find something helpful there.

Thanks hosta but I don't need to divide them yet but they're by the front door with dying leaves. I just want to tidy them up without compromising next year's flowers

Just the normal end of season thing. It'll sprout again next year. New shoots coming up already. I normally trim the old leaves back in the autumn but wondered if I was doing the right thing.

  • I've always trimmed them down into the 'fan shape' at this time of year to prevent wind-rock over the winter. image

I'm quite relaxed about the whole " end of season, looking shabby" thing. I'd leave them alone.

I like my plants like me, a bit frayed around the edges, or just plain shabby!
