Bob the winter really has played havoc with so many different plants hasn't it? Hope the rest come through ok. I always think it's about preparing the planting 'hole' as much as anything -I've had sticky clay in every garden I've had so always took my time improving the soil before putting anything in and it was time and money well spent. Not always easy to do though when you wantto getsome stuff in the ground!
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
Hi, last year around sep oct i split up an exesting raspberry cane, and only now have i got some bud's begining to open up, every thing is very late this year.
My poor raspberries have their new leaves but all are showing manganese deficiency (yellow veins and leaf edges). I garden on sandy soil and all that rain has just rinsed the lovely nutrients out.
May have apply yet more compost and chicken pellets £££; sprayed them today with a mix of Epsom Salt and miracle gro solution and just waiting to see if I can bring them back from the brink.
Marinelilium, if you have an Aldi near you I got a massive (4kg) box of growmore from there for a fiver, it was a while ago, but worth a look. I always check online to see what they are getting in stock as I've had some bargains from there (three raspberry canes for 3.99), lots of their eqiupment is as cheap as chips and of decent quality. You could try a JTF if you have one near you for chicken manure pellets, or failing that one of those 'countryside' stores, forgot what the one near us is called, but that's always better value than the garden centre for bits like that.
It's a type of cash and carry, I think they are as far south as Birmingham and as north as Newcastle. Dead cheap, really good for things like pots and containers, seeds, bulbs, daleks, dustbin burners etc. They normally have things at a fraction of the price of supermarkets, garden centres etc, BUT it's dependant on them having what you want, at the time you want it. Or you having the cash at the time they have stuff on sale. Missed out just after Christmas this year, as they were selling a childrens' outside play gym/den/slide/swing in the shape of a pirate ship for £250. Unfortunately it was £250 that neither myself or my husband had, so the kids have missed out this year. Will have to remember and see if they get anything in next year.
I planted 6 autumn fruiting raspberries for the first time late last autumn. They showed no signs of life until about 3 weeks ago. The last of the 6 finally produced a very small shoot last week. None of them have made much growth yet but they are all alive and I hope will begin to grow better once the weather warms up. My rhubarb crowns on the other hand, also planted last autumn have only had a 50% survival rate. Only 4 out of 8 have actually turned into growing plants and even a couple of those seem pretty poor.
Thanx MMP. I found the blood, fish and bone box in a carrier bag tucked behind two paint cans in the garage....must sort those shelves out.
aldi seem to have some real garden bargains so I will look in next week when I head off to collect my free compost ( last year's recycled green waste from local authority).
Their compost is lovely, so they must get it much hotter than I can get mine
I also dug out old raspberries end of summer, made new deep bed, awaited mail order canes ,planted then in november. only 3 out of 12 grew this month, phoned mr Fothergills - good company ! they apologised and said they would send replacements.got letter saying despatch from nov 12. didnt read this properly,so went to buy a few canes so we would not be without raspberries to long.guess what 4 days later 12 canes arrived in post !! these had shoots on so fingers crossed. i now have a good full row !!
