Frost Potection For My Echium pininana

this year i've been growing a Echium pininana Blue Steeple in my garden. Its not flowered this year, hopefully next year if i can get it through the winter. It said on many sites that they ain't very frost hardy, Whats the best way to try to keep it from biting the dust.

I know Lyn leaves hers in the ground over the winter . In the relatively mild Devon/ Cornwall.

Mine ( in Devon ) are a bit smaller than yours , having read the link pansyface posted, I think I'll leave mine in the polytunnel and plant out in Spring.

    Devon.

I think you are probably wise there Hostafan, you have to remember that I am on the border but because of the altitude I am 3c below quoted temperatures.

I lost quite a few last winter, I find that the self seeded ones are much more alcimatized, I suppose they get used to their surroundings all year.

this is one that did survive, he's about 3ft there, and now even bigger

I'll let you some in Spring Lyn. I'm sure there's enough to share, and it was your seed.

  • Would a fleece winter cover for plants help?

  • Maybe notimage, its in a corner by my fence and has a tree above so it has shelter from cold winds but it gets below 0 here in stoke-on-trent.

The 7c is for  the new plants that have been grown from seed in July, they would only be about 3 to 4 inches tall by  the winter.

You could try a fleece jacket on yours, put a thick padding of mulch around.

In the Spring it may look black and dead, they grow out again from the trunk.
