I don't put invasive "weeds" in the compost bin - which to me are things like bindweed, dandelions, enchanters' nightshade, ivy, celandine. I have a good local council collection, so some can go in there.
I wouldn’t put buttercups or ground elder in. I don’t put tomato Pips in for the reason someone mentioned, forever picking them out, potato eyes are another, I do put the peeling in though and last year had lots of potatoes from the ones I left, who says you have to ridge them up😀
Gardening on the wild, windy west side of Dartmoor.
No Hosta, I enjoy all my surprises. Avocados, peaches, apricots, etc all seem to sprout in my beds.. and thousands of tomatoes (mainly from all the little cherry types that fall to the ground or I pick off because they are split). My compost is too dry to ever turn into soil.. so I store all my kitchen waste in two large rubber garbage cans with lots of holes drilled in. In the fall I spread it over top the raised beds and bury it with grass clippings and leaves so the worms can have it ready by the time I'm ready to plant in spring.. or this year I was behind, so I put it all down in a trench down the middle of each raised bed. It means that many things grow, as the composting hasn't 'killed' them off. Makes for some exciting finds. All my weeds go on a pile behind the rhubarb, to slowly compost down as a pile. It's dry, so the bindweed and couch grass is killed off in the heat before there is any risk of regrowth. The only thing that goes into the garbage is horsetail.
