Winter onion sets
in Fruit & veg
hi guys and gals,
i have winter onion sets that I've bought in, problem is my raised beds still have in my squash and also other bits and pieces.
Has as anyone ever started them off in pots or anything and then transplanted them?
Im thinking I may be a little late already?

Not sure why you think it's too late. Are they designed for early planting?
Last year I planted mine directly into the soil in November but had some left over and planted them up in pots in case any of the ones in the ground failed, I didn't have any failures so planted the ones in pots into the ground in February neither the ground sown or the pot sown performed any better or worse than the other. On reflection my ground is too heavy for winter sown onions so I won't bother again especially as they are said not to store as well as spring sown onions.
Seeing this link suddenly made me realise I hadn't planted my overwinter onions, a quick dash to the local garden centre found they hadn't even been delivered, maybe next week, I do when possible plant the end of August it won't happen this year, we use the winter grown first, and store the spring/summer grown, this years Sturon residing in the glasshouse, nicely dried off.
Hi
Also bought mine today senshuri and Shakespear and will get them planted up in the next two weeks as i am just preparing the bed.
Had quite a good crop from last year and any not used are now chopped and frozen in the freezer.
This years main crop onions are currently drying out before storing however to tell the truth i use them when i want as they are a great quality and tastes really good.
Fresh red onions are a bonus and every year plant more and more
If you cannot get them planted because of the weather plant up in modules and they will root up and when planted out will help against the birds pulling them up
Happy gardening
I planted Electric red onions this morning, as usual in a soil based compost J I number 2, in 24 cell modules, I have found the roots adapt to the soil better when planted using soil based composts, than when using propriety composts, the roots freely search into the soil, use the same compost for beans peas etc.
Hi all
planted my winter onions in modules and planted in the ground yesterday.
hopefully get a good crop back as last year
happy gardening
Onions now out in the garden and looking good, they usually do well, and save using next years main crop, until later in the year.
You can plant into November, in a spot that is not too wet
Planted my onions and garlic 2 weeks ago
