Young Silver Birch Tree

Hi All, I have a young silver birch tree about 4yrs old.  Yesterday whilst i was weeding around the base of my tree i noticed that there are a couple of cracks on the base of the trunk, also i noticed a couple of roots showing on the surface. What  could have caused the cracks in the tree?.  Could it be something that i have done wrong or is it insect damage. 

Will my tree gradually die off or is there anything i can do to save my tree.  All help and advice appreciated.
