Well ok ... Lavender prefer sun but they still do very well in shade as i had mine in a North facing shadey spot for 3 months and they still look great (moved them round to south yesterday) The bees are all over them, plus supposedly (and I'm too terrified to try it) you can cut them right back for the winter.
I've opened out one corner, so it's about 1m square in the left corner; I might be able to squeeze a small tree in the corner to give some height. The climber will be on the right by the door (perhaps a rose; ) and the lavender might work along the front of the house; I might put a rosemary shrub in there too.
I've not had a weekend to work on it for a few weeks, and I still need to actually build the edging and fill it with soil. The planting might have to wait until spring!
Thanks Pansyface, I'll probably just give them a medium pruning so they don't get their stems broken by gale force winds. Geoff that sounds like a lovely design plan and good choices especially now it's Autumn. Maybe in Spring you could then add a few showy perennials on the border for a bit of spring colour.
I like clematis armandii - flowers winter time ( although flowered in august too this year) . Flowers have beautiful perfume -semi evergreen. Some of the leaves can have a tendency to get brown tips but I just snip them off.
Doh! Sorry ...was on my phone on the train and skimmed the previous posts. it's not the 'usual'flower type of a clematis though bit more discreet /woodland I think.
Thanks. The reason I don't want Clematis is simply because I have a couple around the back already. I want something different. I might change my mind; but I know what I'm in for with them!

Thanks again for the suggestions.

Gardeningily, Geoff mentioned in one of his comments that he didn't want a clematis though I'm not sure why, I absolutely adore them.
