if you have old carpet lay it over the leaves. It will help in lots of way's. The Carpet will still let it breath & rain water can penetrate the mulch . In other words the carpet is acting like the top layer of leaves in a wood. The bottom layer will rot & your have your mulch in about 6 to 9 months. Turn with a fork from time to time & make sure it does not dry out. If you want to make a compost, mulching bin, then line the Wooden or wire bin with carpet. As long as you get worm damp heat with a small amount of Oxygen & plenty of leaves your get what your after
