PLANTING BULBS

I currently have Begonias in a bed and want them to stay there until first frost.

But when they come out I want to plant both daffodils and tulips so that I have both early flowering bulbs (the daffodils) and the later flowering bulbs (the tulips).

The problem is that I have been told that daffodils need to go in quite early.

Moreover, If i can plant both what space should I leave between the daffodils and the tulips?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Regards,

Rob.

  • You could plant your daffodils in baskets (the sort used for planting in ponds) and then sink the baskets into the beds when you take out your begonias.   That way they'd be in naturalistic clumps.  When your do put the baskets into the border you can then plant your tulips in naturalistic clumps between the baskets of daffs.

It is probably best to plant dafs early BUT they won't come to any harm if planted later.  In practice I have planted them up to December and they haven't come to any harm; they may be a little late in the first spring but no long term harm.
