Winter container display

I have a Phormium Yellow Wave that I want to use as the main plant in a large terracotta bowl for a winter display on our west-facing front verandah-type porch.

I'm stuck for ideas of other plants to combine with it for a striking display.

Any ideas please ... image

  • You could use a dark purple Heuchera as I think the contrast of the purple and leaf shape would be eye catching image

  • Thanks NGL image

    Any more ideas folks?

I love those new heucheras that are apparently a cross between heuchera and tiarella and are fully trailing, they look amazing. They were in one of the catalogues - the dutch one I think.

  • I too am a recent convert to heuchera/heucherella and that's what I'm trying in my tub this year. I'm popping in some Pansies and a few wee toning crocuses and my main plant will be a dwarf skimmia rubra. I hope it looks as lovely as t does in my head!image

  • Sounds good PP image

My container has been planted up with the Yellow Wave phormium and three Melting Fire heucheras http://www.perennials.com/plants/heuchera-melting-fire.html  and it's on the front porch looking fab! image

I'll fill another pot with bulbs to put out next spring image

  • eeeeeeee that's a fancy piece of kit! I hope the heuchera are a success in containers (can't think why they wouldn't be). My local village has large areas planted up using deep burgundy/purple with lime green ferns. They just sit there month after month looking stunning. I wish mine would hurry up and arrive; I ordered them over a week ago! Sake!
