Agapanthus care

The agapanthus is now past its best and wondered how best to prepare it for next year.? Should I just cut the head off Or cut the stalk right back as far as I can?

Thanks.

  • You can cut off the stalks or leave them till they dry out if you want to collect the seeds to grow some more.

  • I’ve moved my pots of agapanthus into the greenhouse for the winter. Do I need to water or feed until they come back onto the garden next summer?

Drying out at this time of year is one of the biggest causes of non flowering in the following year.

I have removed all but one flower head on mine as I want the seeds.  The others were cut down to the base as it looks better and stops you poking out your eye on tall, stiff stems.  They need the foliage left on to feed the roots and build up energy for next year.   Mine is a ceramic pot in full sun and will be watered till the leaves die down and then placed in a frost free shelter for winter.
