What causes rust on plants

I've got a small patch of broad leaf willow herb, I personally like it as does the wildlife, but annoyingly 'rust' has come along and the leafs are covered in it...

I'm going to rip it all up and start a fresh patch next year but i have two questions,    how do I prevent it and what causes it?      Thank you

It is a  fungus, so theoretically any fungicide should deal with it. Damp airless conditions tend to help it develop, so getting good airflow round plants does help......a little.
