Need lawn advice.
My garden lawn is full of weeds, the grass patchy & has rocks in the soil. I need to turn over all the soil but because it's a big garden I don't fancy doing it by hand. Is there a easier way or a machine that I can hire to turn it over? Any advice would be great. Thanks.

Rotovating's a big mistake if you have loads of weeds. Any perennial nasties will simply be chopped up and every bit will form a new plant so you'll increase the problem.
What exactly do you mean by 'rocks' Andrew? Remove any larger stones but small ones won't really be an issue.
I'd use a weed and feed product - although you really need to wait till spring for that now. That gets rid of the weeds and you can then oversow with grass seed. After that gets going, mow regularly- at least once a week and not too short. That will make a huge difference. You'll need to wait for about six months before using any further weed and feed products, but re apply the feed now and again in the future as per instructions to maintain the grass. You'll see a huge improvement quite quickly.
If you don't want to wait till spring, you could kill off the existing area with a weedkiller, and then prepare the area thoroughly (no getting away from digging it over!) and sow seed then. It's getting a little late to do that amount of prep - you really want to be at the seed sowing stage now - but it depends where you are and what your garden conditions are.
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
