Stipa tenuissima flopping

I planted up 3 stipa tenuissima in a semi-shaded bed under a silver birch this spring. Looked lovely for a while but for the last month or so they have just collapsed onto the ground and are very sad looking. Any idea why? I have watered now and again

Thanks

When I'm not gardening I'm garden visiting. Stipa tenuissima is flopping in many gardens

    In the sticks near Peterborough
  • Thanks. If I leave it alone and stop watering, will it recover?

  • It is pretty sunny, well, semi. South-facing but in the dappled shade of a small silver birch, so thought it would be ok there in terms of sun. Will divide them when they're a bit bigger and healthier I think, give them a chance to recover from the water first. Maybe replant with a bit of grit/gravel under the roots?

I follow the advice from Knoll Gardens: when they start to flop, cut them back by about a third. I have done this for the last few years and come August they are standing up again and looking good.

  • Mine has flopped... too much rain... .. but as it self seeds everywhere I'm going to risk cutting it back hard in early spring.
