Plants suitable for shady shallow/rocky bed

This little bed only exists at the back of my garden because I needed to put a supporting 'wall' in to stop my neighbour's garden sliding into mine (the level of their garden is about 60cm higher than mine). Anyway, as it's not actually a wall, I'm left with a mini bed which is about 20cm deep and just under 2m wide (1st photo below). The bed will not get that much sun, and the soil is not consistently deep due to the hardcore I put at the bottom of it to support the neighbour's garden (see 2nd photo below).

So, suggestions of native plants which would like these conditions, please! I was thinking along the lines of low lying plants like mosses or saxifrage, but open to ideas. Think I might also put an ivy in there to grow up the fence which is behind the bed.

  • I do love mint, especially if it's in a mojito image

  • Thanks for the suggestions!

I was planning a herb garden on the other side of the garden, so I'll probably put the mint there and keep this one for other plants. I'll look up some of Jo47's suggestions as I know very little about plants at the moment.

Back to mint - I have a couple of small pots of mint at the moment,  which I brought with me from my last garden, and everyone always mentions how much better freshly picked mint tastes in our mojitos compared to the shop-bought stuff. I'm going to expand my mint production for sure. Might have a stab at making mint sauce too image

  • remember if you plant mint in your herb garden keep it in a pot, otherwise in three years you'll have a bed of mint with occasional herbs trying to grow through it!
