Magnolia

I have a Magnolia Stellata which has been in a large pot for more than 5 years, it seems healthy enough.  We used to live in South London but have moved to NE Scotland, I now want to plant it in the ground but would like some advice about planting it ie what if any special measures I should take?  Do they like ericaceous soil, my soil is not well drained, is this a problem?  What about the roots are they robust or fragile?

  • Hi there Ian

I garden on heavy clay and it's not acidic. I have a 7 year old magnolia stellata and it's thriving.

Prepare your soil with plenty of grit for drainage and compost and ensure its not sited in a frost pocket. make sure the hole is big enough for the rootball so you won't damage the roots as magnolias resent root disturbance though yours should be ok being containerised, your magnolia should be fine.

  • Great, thanks, I'm going to wait until the leaves start falling off in about 3 weeks then plant it, slight problem soil is very full of stones therefore digging a 2 ft deep 3 feet diameter hole is very hard labour.
