i have two Irises in pots, over time the corms have spread and developed several arms, how and when do you divide these up and what type of soil and position do they like when planted out?

Much obliged. I didn't mention that I live in Aberdeenshire, where it gets a bit chilly in winter! Are they hardy? Should the be protected in winter?
which irises are they? there are aquatic and arrid loving types.
