I found this fruit on a few trees locally. These pics are of a ripened fruit found on the ground. The ones still on the trees have a white inner and bright red pips.
They are quite hard (even the ripe ones) and smell of apple.
I'll get couple of pics tomorrow if I can. They don't look anything like crab apples I've seen. These started off purple on the trees just like plums but hard, and smaller than crab apples.

They started purple, now they're a lighter colour?
The two ends of the fruit would give a clue as well,

Crabapple 'Neville Copeman' has purple fruits that ripen to orange/red in autumn.
