Standard Bay

The leaves on my standard bay trees are yellowing.  The trees are 4 years old, in pots and watered regularly, what do I need to bring back their glossy green leaves?  Help!

  • Is it all of them or just a few?  They do lose some leaves from time to time - mine has some yellow ones at the moment.  I just pick them off.  A foliar feed with a spray of some diluted seaweed feed always perks mine up.  I do it two or three times through the summer.  A spray just now would be fine.

If it's all the leaves that are yellowing then the trees may need repotting - use a John Innes loam based compost - I add some horticultural grit in the proportion of 1 part grit to 4 parts compost.  This ensures sharp drainage so they get plenty of water without the roots sitting in wet compost for too long.

    Hope that helps image

  • Thank you Dovefromabove I will try foliar feed and repotting and will report progress in few weeks.

  • I've got a standard bay tree in my garden. There's some yellow leaves in the tree. I pick these off, feed the plant and the plant seemed to recover!! Hope yours will do to.

  • Yes, all trees, even evergreens, have to lose leaves at some time image

  • Should my new bay tree be left outside in winter, please?

Also, is any special care needed throughout the year?

  • Yes, it'll be fine outside in the winter - mine's been outside for around 15 years.  If it's in an exposed place move it to somewhere more sheltered if possible.

The pot's usually more fragile than the bay so I bubble wrap the pot.

Raise the container up onto some feet or bricks if it isn't already, to aid drainage so the compost doesn't get waterlogged.

They can cope with cold - it's cold and wet combined that does the damage to most mediterranean plants.
