Unknown apple variety

An apple tree completely laden with fruit has fallen over into our garden from a neighbours. It seems a shame to let all the fruit go to waste but how do I know if the apples are ripe - the ones at the top of the tree are large and slightly red but they are still out of reach. Most of the ones I can reach are smaller and only a little red. I think they are cooking apples. How do I know if the ones that have fallen are ripe? Is there anything I can do with the unripe ones?

  • Cooking apples are usually green in my experience. Best thing is to cut a fallen apple and taste it. I usually juice our glut of apples or cook them.

  • Thanks guys - I'll have a look at the pips!

The less said about the neighbours the better - they're not interested in the apples or the fact that their tree has fallen over and taken our wall and the other neighbours shed roof with it!

I bet they will be when they get the bill.
