privacy screen

Hi all, Ive recently bought a property with a large garden. The garden is fenced with a 6ft pvc coated wire mesh open fence which offers no privacy. The plot is surrounded by woodland (pine trees) and there are no neighbours but I would like to get to work and plant myself a screen. I'm torn between two options, bamboo such as phyllostachys aura or conifers such as juniper chinensi or something similar. I appreciate that with the bamboo I will have to install protection to stop any unwanted spread. The soil is sandy and loose and there is a good warm climate. Can anyone give me any advice as to what they would recommend?

many thanks in advance

Danny

Neither.  If the garden is sheltered dig in and layer on loads of lovely well rotted compost and manure to improve water retention and nutrient levels then plant lots of lovely clematis and honeysuckle and roses for perfume and pyracantha which is good for wildlife and evergreen.

Bamboos and conifers offer very little for wildlife and can run away with themselves all too quickly and end up being a nightmare of dullness.

  • ok thanks guys I will look into your suggestions. Just one thing though, will the plants that you have mentioned give me an actual screen?

I don't see why you can't use conifers. Just please don't use bamboo. If I am not wrong, the soil you have sounds like dream soil for bamboo! With the conifers, you could plant a mix so that it will blend in to the forest a bit... Use a different variety of them... And use climbers to climb over your fence... Use a mix of decidous and evergreen ones... they will look really nice and hopefully give you a screen asap until the conifers(and other trees) catch up.

I'd agree totally with obelixx and Tetley. A far better screen using climbers etc. Pyracantha is evergreen (Berberis is another similar shrub) and there are evergreen clematis Danny, so no problem with having a more solid barrier.

I think you'd deeply regret conifers and bamboo image

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • hi guys and thanks for all the comments they have been really helpful. The length of the fence is actually huge, I would say at least 300 meters. With this in mind I might carry out the planting in sections.

Ideally I would like to find something that takes hold and thickens out relatively quickly to create almost a wall of green. I'm not too concerned about colour as there is a multitude of other plants and trees already in the garden that give great diversity. A height of around 7-8ft would be ideal.

AIso, with such a long run I would like to find something that isn't too much maintenance.

    Hope this helps
