And this is this years dump of plants that I want to rationalise and turn into a proper hot bed. I've only been here a year so this extension to the beds by the hedge was made from an old weedy mess recently and has just been a bit of a storage area for my plant addiction!
Thats not a clothes horse, thats a rotary airer. Mine broke last year with a full load of whites, luckily the ground was dry. Hubby made it into a veg cage this year. Used the 4 metal posts on the corners, course there is holes all down them for the wire, he went round several times with the wire, and voila, a nice sturdy cage!
Tetley - get a big island bed in there and fill it with treasures
Whether anyone thinks it's retro or not, if it pleases you that's all that matters. Some lovely planting around that tree will enhance it. A small, mean bed would look silly but you have plenty of space to put in a nice big one and make it look balanced.
Mark out different sizes and shapes with rope or hosepipe and see what looks best from all angles before you get the spade out. I think it would be terrific
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
..... Dove: I might "draw" round the tree and just turn the turf over, compost over the top and not plant. Love the pictures, that looks like a grand day out and not that far from me. .....
Whereabouts are you Tetley ........ approximately? I'm from down that way and so is Wonky
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
Thanks for the support everyone, it looks like my idea would work. I don't fancy deepening the existing bed as this would make accessing the hedge difficult and add no interest like the grass path would, I do fancy quite a wide one and have had the hosepipe out already getting a feel for the space.

The garden certainly looks wide enough to accommodate an island bed. Just be careful not to make the walkways too narrow.
