Grapes

I was interested in last Friday's programme in which Monty Don was thinking about solutions for protecting his grape crop from predators, I have just returned from living in Spain where I observed that most Spanish homes had patios with a structure which they grew grape vines over, after pollination they placed large paper bags, tied at the base with string, over the developing fruit, protecting it from birds and insects, I hope this will solve the problem.

Hi Cynthia ann Lennox It might be ok as long as the bags don't get wetimage
  • Monty Don was growing the grapes in his greenhouse, so bags would not get wet, but don't forget I lived in the South of Spain and the rain fall came in September and early spring so obviously bags did not get wet during growing season but this was my observation and the bags may have been of a different material, but looked like paper.

  • I live in East Anglia and my grapes are outside - from the looks of things they're going to be perfectly ripe in about 14 days' time - we go away in 12 days' time - it looks as if the kind next door neighbours who will be watering and keeping an eye on the place will have to fight the blackbirds and the wasps for a share of the grapes. image
