Magnolia pruning

I have a magnolia that is spreading out at the bottom quite near to the soil surface. I would like to open it up underneath. When is the best time to do this? It is in a sheltered position in North west England.

Magnolia don't really like pruning but if you need to, now is the ideal time. Some advice from the RHS here:

Thanks for the advice and the link. I will do some now and then a bit more next year.
