Chilli identification

 Hello all,

Can anyone help me in identifying this chilli plant. I was sold them as Padron Chilli's, however I now doubt that, due to shape, size and heat. They are all fairly hot. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks

  • Where did you get it from?

Maybe there was a mix up and if you know what else they sell, that might narrow it down.

    Hi Chris 11,

Purchased the seeds from a National garden centre, the package is Franchi peperone padron They're still on sale, I checked today. But looking up the picture on the internet my plant looks nothing like it should. I'll purchase some more seeds for next year and see what I end up with. Cheers
  • In that case, I'd take a guess that your chilli might be an 'Etna' variety?

Another possibility is a hybrid, due to accidental cross-pollination. Chillies cross-pollinate quite easily, so it's not unusual, although less common when the seed is from a reputable source that has taken steps to avoid it. Your seeds could even have been collected from a parent Padron pod, that had been cross-pollinated with an Etna or something else.

Thank you very much Chris 11. I think you've probably solved the query. It certainly looks like mine. I'll buy from a specialist chilli seed seller, ensure no cross pollution and see. Thanks again much appreciated.

I've had crossed seeds from Franchi before. Pity, because they have a decent range.

  • Could I have cross pollinated the plant by self pollinated with a brush ? or would it have been at source ?

  • No, the cross pollination would have happened in the previous generation. Nothing you've done image

  • Thanks Doverfromabove. I'm fairly new to chilli growing, but really enjoying it. Cheers

When you said can anyone name this chilli, I thought you wanted suggestions, like Charlie the Chilli, or maybe Cheryl the chilli?

    I'll get me coat image
