Smelly tree roots

Have just moved ibto a house and on digging over the garden discovered some long tree roots which we believe are from an old silver birch in the neighbour's garden (her house is lying empty). These roots have a very strong odour (rather unpleasant) and we wonder what causes this odour. Is it just peculiar to silver birch trees?
