Thank you all. Yes that does indeed look like the one I have except that that one is much healthier than mine and I honestly never saw any flowers though clearly there must have been at least six, that's the number of seed pods on the tree.
I shall pay more attention to it from now on now that I know what it is. It's been in my garden for about three years and we planted one lime and one lemon tree and always thought this was either one or the other, clearly it is neither but instead an unusual and attractive shrub. Its height is about 6ft so I guess it must be near it's maximum and filling out quite nicely. Once again my thanks to all of you.

You're welcome. By the way, you can usually tell a citrus by squashing the leaves.
Chimonanthus flowers very early in the year, before the leaves come, you need to be a winter gardener to appreciate it
In the sticks near Peterborough
i meant to add the aroma of the squashed leaf gives the clue
Or a flower arranger - just one stem of flowers will perfume a room

I shall look forward to it!
Strange how I acquired it though. I will have to try again with the lemon and lime. Thank you for your time.
David, are you in the UK? Citrus fruits don't grow outside here, they need a warm conservatory.
