Thanks for your advice. Will look at phyllostachys, along with the Fargesia, and have a think. Looking forward to the garden now the weather has warmed up. Think the Fatsia Japonica has taken the worse bashing with the cold weather this year, so started to tidy all the dead brown leaves on it yesterday.
Hello, I know the original thread is from years back, but I’ve a question about bamboo myself. I’m looking for a compact, non running form that will thrive in a large pot, as it’s due to go in a tiny courtyard that is effectively north facing but bright at that. Would Fargesia Rufa be a good one to go for? I’ve only ever grown running bamboos in a garden that had lots of sun and they were a total nightmare to contain (I knew nothing about what bamboos can do, back then 😳) Thanks.

It was sad to see the Fatsia in the frosts with it's drooping foliage. Hopefully they'll be ok though now
